The Holy Trinity of Cleansing: Sage, Hyssop and Rose Geranium

Living in New Orleans, we know a thing or two about humidity, heavy air and the need for a good scrub. But I am not just talking about the kind of clean you get from a shower; I am talking about spiritual hygiene.

Just as you wouldn’t walk around for a week without washing your face, you shouldn’t walk around with a cluttered aura, either. We pick up residue everywhere we go—stray emotions in the grocery line, heavy vibes from a stressful meeting, or just the static of the daily news.

Over my forty years of practice1111, I have refined my own “spiritual toolkit” down to three absolute powerhouses. I call them the Trinity of Cleansing. Each hails from a different tradition, but together, they cover every base—air, earth and body.

1. Sage: The Air Clearer

Most folks are familiar with Sage and for good reason. Rooted in Native American tradition, white sage is the standard for clearing the air—literally and metaphorically.

I use sage as incense to break up stagnant energy in a room. Think of smoke as a spiritual broom; it sweeps through the atmosphere, neutralizing the static and resetting the vibration. When the air feels thick or you have had an argument in the house, light a little sage. Open a window and let that heavy energy drift right on out.

2. Hyssop: The Biblical Wash

Hyssop is an ancient herb with serious credentials. It is mentioned right there in the Bible: “Purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean.”

While sage clears the air, hyssop is for the foundation. In New Orleans traditional spiritual work, hyssop is used primarily as a floor wash. It is powerful for scrubbing away the footprints of negativity that might have walked through your front door. If your home feels chaotic or “off,” brewing a floorwash of hyssop and using it to mop is like hitting the spiritual reset button on your sanctuary.

3. Rose Geranium: The Heavy Lifter

Now, let me introduce you to the secret weapon. In my early trainings, the renowned pagan herbalist Herman Slater introduced me to Rose Geranium. He taught me that while other herbs protect, Rose Geranium is the strongest herb of all for banishing negativity. It doesn’t just ask bad vibes to leave; it escorts them out.

This is my personal non-negotiable. I use Rose Geranium soap every single time I bathe. It is my daily armor. By washing with it, you are literally scrubbing away any attachments or low vibrations you picked up during the day, ensuring you step out of the bath not just physically clean, but spiritually pristine.

Your Ritual for Total Clarity

You don’t need a complicated ceremony to get started. Spiritual work should be practical.

  • For your Home: Burn Sage to clear the headspace and wash your floors with Hyssop to ground the energy.
  • For Yourself: Keep a bar of Rose Geranium soap in your shower. Visualize the water washing away not just the dirt, but the stress, the doubt and anyone else’s energy you might be carrying.

Keep your spirit as clean as your hands and you will find it much easier to hear that beautiful intuition of yours.

From my heart here in New Orleans to yours: follow your bliss, let spirit lead you and know that you are loved.
